NC Native Will Launch New Program

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 5, 2008) —

Dr. Stephen Scott, president of Wake Technical Community College (WTCC), announced today that Barry Street has been named Director of Athletics at the college. Street, formerly Athletics Director at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, began his new job at Wake Tech on June 2.

Street hits the ground running to get teams in place, coaches hired, and games scheduled by this fall. Last February, the WTCC Board of Trustees approved the athletics program for a Fall 2008 kickoff, with men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s golf. Basketball is slated to be added in 2009, baseball and softball in 2010.

“It’s really exciting,” said Street. “It’s great to have this unique opportunity to start an athletics program from the ground floor. I’m looking forward to great things for Wake Tech sports teams.”

Street has an outstanding reputation as a successful basketball coach and athletics program administrator. During his three-year stint as Athletics Director at Montgomery College, he took MC-Rockville to a national championship and 6 regional championships, as well as a sportsmanship award. At Montgomery College, Street also implemented the first-ever athletic study hall while overseeing more than $350,000 dollars worth of facility improvements. During his tenure, the athletics department placed 23 student athletes on the NJCAA Region XX academic team.

Prior to his work at Montgomery College, Street served in various coaching and administrative roles at UNC-Greensboro, NC Central University, Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs and Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, where he revitalized the women’s basketball program and took it to new heights.

“We know Barry is the right person for this job,” said Dr. Scott. “He has the sports expertise, the leadership skills, and the enthusiasm we need. We know Wake Tech athletics will be successful under his guidance.”

Since the athletics program was first announced, Wake Tech has received numerous inquiries from potential players, coaches, and excited fans. Vice President for Development Mort Congleton expressed his excitement about Street’s appointment and about sports as another way for Wake Tech to connect with the community.

“We’re thrilled to see so much community interest at this early stage,” Congleton said. “We plan to offer naming rights and other options for private and corporate supporters who want to get involved.”

Street grew up in Creedmoor in Granville County. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from UNC Greensboro and a Master’s degree in Sports Management from NOVA Southeastern University. He and his wife, Darlene Joyner, have two children, Mariah, age 17, and Tyler, age 11.
