Wake Tech Launches Contest to Name New Sports Teams
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 31, 2008) –
What’s in a name? School spirit! Wake Tech Community College (WTCC) today began a campaign to name its new athletic teams – and the community is invited to participate.
The Board of Trustees voted in February to bring competitive sports to WTCC. The new athletics program begins this fall with men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s golf. Basketball will be added in the 2009-2010 school year; baseball and softball a year later. Wake Tech teams will play in Region 10, Division 1, of the North Carolina Junior College Athletics Association.
The College already has a mascot of sorts: The WTCC Student Government Association (SGA) adopted the image of an eagle some time ago. The eagle appears on student parking decals and at various other places around campus, and the Internet portal used by faculty and staff is called “Eagles Nest.” But with the arrival of the new athletics program, College leaders wondered if it might be time for a change. Students, faculty, and staff are being polled to see if they want the eagle to remain as their symbol or if there may be a more fitting moniker to represent Wake Tech.
For the next two weeks, students, faculty, and staff will submit their ideas online. A committee of representatives from each group will review all entries and choose three or four finalists. The contest will then be opened to the public during the week of April 21. The committee’s choices will be posted on www.waketech.edu and community residents will be invited to vote for their favorite. One vote per computer will be accepted. The winner will be announced before the school semester ends on May 7.
