Community Helps Wake Tech Pick Nickname

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 29, 2008) —

The Eagle has landed at Wake Tech - again! After four weeks and more than 1700 votes, the community has spoken. Wake Tech Community College will officially become known as the “Eagles.” The community was invited to join students, faculty, and staff in selecting the name for Wake Tech’s new athletic teams, which begin play this fall. “Eagles” beat out five other names in the final round, including Warriors, Wildcats, Wings, Sparks, and Ventures. The winning name was announced at a pep rally on Wake Tech’s Main Campus today.

Here are comments from some of the voters who favored “Eagles” for the new name:

“The name ’Eagles’ fits the top-notch attitude and strength of the students and alumni at WTCC.”

“A Wake Tech education helps you to soar above and beyond as only eagles dare!”

“See Webster’s: Large strong birds of prey with sharp vision. This could imply Strength & Vision — Strength to compete athletically yet with a Vision of the future through an education at Wake Tech.”

In the final round, the Eagles got 40% of the vote, Warriors 27%, Wildcats 16%, Sparks 6%, Wings 5%, and Ventures 3%. The Eagle already has a history at Wake Tech; the WTCC Student Government Association (SGA) adopted it as a mascot years ago, and its image appears on parking decals and other places on campus.

Wake Tech leaders also announced that the College has a new web page with information on the athletics program. Anyone interested in playing on a Wake Tech team or keeping up with the program can visit http://athletics.waketech.edu.

The new athletics program begins this fall with men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s golf. Basketball will be added in the 2009-2010 school year; baseball and softball a year later. Wake Tech teams will play in Region 10, Division 1, of the North Carolina Junior College Athletics Association.
