Coach’s Corner

Barry Street was hired as Wake Tech’s first Athletics Director in June 2008. Having built his reputation as an outstanding basketball coach and administrator, Street has eagerly and expertly balanced day-to-day operations with the unique demands of an athletics program that is brand new.
Street began his coaching career while still a student at UNC-Greensboro. During two stints as assistant coach at UNC-G (1991-93 and 1995-98), Street helped the Spartans to a 97-45 record. The team won three consecutive regular season Big South Conference titles and appeared in three Big South Tournament finals. In 1997-98, he guided the Spartans to a 21-6 record in their first year as a Division I program and their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament. His coaching also led to five first-team all-conference selections for the team’s post players, while three players won all-academic honors. The 1997-98 team was ranked #18 in the nation academically by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
In between 1993 and 1995, Street was an assistant coach for the Lady Eagles at North Carolina Central University. He helped the Division II team to score double-digit wins for the first time in 12 years and their first CIAA first-round win in a decade. He also implemented the first-ever training and strength program for the women’s basketball team.
As head coach at Johnson C. Smith University, Street coached four CIAA first-team All-Conference selections and one All-Rookie selection. In his first season, he led the team to a 15-3 record and a first-round win in the CIAA tournament – for the first time in four years. Eleven of his players were honored with academic awards, and Street himself won numerous CIAA Coach-of-the-Week awards. He revitalized the women’s basketball program, taking it to #5 regional NCAA ranking, the highest in Golden Bulls’ history. In his last year at JSCU, Street led the team to a 19-10 record and the semifinals of the CIAA Tournament, for the first time in 10 years. Street led the Golden Bulls’ scoring offense to a No. 6 national ranking.
Most recently, Street served as athletics director at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, leading that team to regional and national championships as well as other awards. In his three years at MC-Rockville, the athletic department placed 23 student athletes on the NJCAA Region XX academic team. Street also implemented the first-ever athletic study hall and managed major facility improvements.
Street received his Bachelor of Science degree from UNC-Greensboro and his Master’s in Sports Management from NOVA Southeastern University. He is married to the former Darlene Joyner, of La Grange, NC, a PhD candidate at UNC-Greensboro. The Streets have two children, Mariah, age 17, and Tyler, age 11.
